The government spent about RM1.8 billion(S$0.7 billion) in 2008 on operating expenses for Chinese national type-schools, including teachers' salaries.
Deputy Education Minister Dr Mohd Puad Zarkashi said this showed the ministry was committed and did not discriminate in the development of education facilities and infrastructure.
"We understand that education is a basic need for all citizens," he said at a dialogue with parents, guardians and administrations of primary and secondary Chinese schools in the Penggaram state constituency on Friday night.
He said through the first economic stimulus package, the government allocated RM50 million to these schools and the same amount was given under the second stimulus package.
Six new Chinese schools were being built nationwide while 13 such schools will be relocated.
He said the relocation was because of the low number of students and added that the schools would be relocated to areas with a larger population.
